Who killed Demoine?

At 9pm Ross Daniels called. ‘Demoine is dead, very dead apparently.’

‘Dead how?’

‘His wife says he locked himself in his study, and later the Fire Department broke down the door because she was worried, and Demoine apparently dismembered himself inside a locked room, on a third floor, no window access.’

‘The wife had a hand in it?’ I puzzled.

‘Unlikely, but it’s a mystery for the police, bits of Demoine all over the room, up the walls and blood on the ceiling, his wife freaked out. She reported no noises, and if a man was dismembered you’d expect some noises.’

‘You would. How long was he in this room?’ I asked with a frown.

‘Ten minutes before she banged on the door, twenty minutes before they broke the door down, windows sealed, just him in the room, and I don’t think he cut his own head off.’

‘No, that would be tricky,’ I agreed. Call ended, I quietly told Rolf, ‘I think the angel got to Demoine.’

Rolf glanced over his shoulder. ‘The angel?’

‘Demoine was found in a locked room, third floor, windows sealed, dismembered – and he didn’t dismember himself!’

‘The conspiracy theorists will see this as yet another conspiracy. They will think his Freemason friends did it.’

Ross Daniels called back half an hour later. ‘You remember the rich French guy, his bodyguard caught at Verdun?’

‘Yeah.’

‘He was also found inside a locked room, dismembered, the news has it now, and the building has CCTV, no one entering or leaving the room.’

‘They’ll see it as a further conspiracy,’ I noted.

‘Shit yeah, and it has me puzzled.’

‘Perhaps some divine intervention.’

‘You think…’

‘Maybe, we’ll wait and see what the police there say.’

Rolf took a call, and one of the two men caught fleeing Stockholm wanted to make a deal. Apparently the man had freaked out and claimed that there was a ghost was in his cell.

Rolf and I exchanged worried looks, and we hid those looks from the twins and Ingrid.
